I really love your post - having just stumbled upon it as I surf the web for articles to give to a group of high school jazz players.

I organize several jazz events in the Augusta, GA, area. One is a 18-week series of outdoor concerts where folks of all ages bring their picnic baskets and lawn chairs to listen to a different style of jazz over the summer. I encourage families to come. Kids get in free. And I hire 3-4 student bands to perform and make a donation to their band department.

I also sponsor the jazz tent at the local open-air market. I perform or bring in a soloist or small combo.

You have inspired me to continue to go into the schools, libraries and parks to play and talk about jazz music. To continue to express how important this music is.

Thank you

I suspect people don't tell others about their love of jazz for the same reason people often don't reveal their love of each other. Fear of rejection--or indifference, which is worse?-- is a powerful barrier to human connection in every sphere. Those who would hide their love away, however, should be mindful of the words of Kahlil Gibran:
"But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears."
