Listen to This: NPR’s Jazz at Newport (Day 2)

by Rachel on August 9, 2009

Today’s webcast lineup includes the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Tony Bennett, Esperanza Spalding, and a James Carter Organ Trio.

Yesterday I got a chance to listen to Cedar Walton All-Stars via webcast with Cedar Walton on the piano, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Lew Tabackin on flute/tenor sax. (Also includes: David Willams on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums) I’m not too familiar with Tabackin, but I found out yesterday that he’s married to  the great pianist, Toshiko Akiyoshi, who I mentioned here. It’s really too bad Akiyoshi wasn’t in the lineup, I would have really liked to hear her play.

Some more trivia: both Cedar Walton and Curtis Fuller were members of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1961-1964). Yay for reunions.

Before you go listen to the webcasts, be sure to download the 12 free samplers of the NPR Newport Jazz festival here. There’s also some folk songs you can download as well, if you’re interested in that stream of music. One of the songs included in the sampler is “Brother Mister” by Christian McBride/Inside Straight from the album Kind of Brown. I wonder where he got that album title from…

Currently playing at this moment is Rudresh Mahanthappa, an alto saxophonist that combines South Asian music and jazz. It’s gorgeous. Next up is Claudia Acuna with Latin-jazz vocals. (The time keeps confusing me because it’s in eastern time (ET), which is three hours ahead from where I am now.)

Happy listening!

P.S. Check out photos from the event here.
