If you’re at all familiar with jazz then you should be pretty acquainted with Dave Brubeck and his 1950s quartet (with Paul Desmond). One of the quartet’s most famous albums is Time Out, including entirely original compositions.
Dave Brubeck’s still a renowned pianist — despite his age, his tunes are still pretty fresh. He’s got the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, National Medal of the Arts, and a place in Downbeat’s Hall of Fame all under his belt. In his compositions, he’s well-known for using irregular meters (take Blue Rondo á La Turk, for example) — if you’re a pianist (even a classical pianist!), check out Seriously Brubeck for some jazzy piano solo pieces, especially if you still aren’t ready to take on improvisation.
So without further ado, here’s some Dave Brubeck to listen to:
1…Take Five.
4…The Duke.
(note: Many of these tunes are from the album Time Out; I highly recommend listening to the whole album if you want to get yourself more familiar with Brubeck.)
CURRENTLY LISTENING TO: Fool’s Fancy/Bud Powell/Jazz Piano Anthology: Bop
